For most of her life, Jennifer* never had a choice. Born with severe allergies that transitioned into asthma by age 14, her nasal passages were chronically congested, and mouth breathing became her default both day and night. "My dad would always say, 'close your mouth, close your mouth,'" she recalls with a laugh. "But my nose was continually stopped up."
What followed were decades of steroid nasal sprays, asthma medications, and disrupted sleep. Jennifer was managing symptoms, not solving problems and her body was paying the price.
Discovering Nasal Breathing and the Tape That Makes It Possible
In her early 50s, Jennifer came across the Buteyko breathing method, a technique focused on reducing over breathing and restoring nasal breathing. It was a turning point. She learned that by breathing through her mouth, she had been gulping far more air than her body needed, and that nasal breathing offered natural filtration and more efficient oxygen exchange that mouth breathing simply cannot replicate.
Mouth tape became a key tool for retraining her breathing during sleep. But finding the right tape proved to be its own journey. "I tried a few others," she explains, "and the same thing happened with both, it was peeling my skin along with the tape." Surgical tape, other brands, fabric-style strips, you name it and she had tried them all. Most were either too aggressive on her skin or simply wouldn't hold through the night.
Why Simply Breathe Made the Difference
When Jennifer found Simply Breathe, she noticed the difference immediately. The hypoallergenic adhesive, developed with the specific goal of being gentle enough for sensitive skin while still providing reliable hold, was unlike anything she had used before. That thoughtful material design is no accident. Simply Breathe was created by Dr. Frank Seaman, a prosthodontist with over 40 years of clinical experience, who recognized that existing mouth tapes were too harsh, too uncomfortable, and too poorly designed for nightly, long-term use.
For Jennifer, that deliberate approach to materials has been the defining factor. "This one seems to work really well for me," she says. "I wasn't having any problems." After years of trial and error with brands that prioritized stickiness over skin safety, she finally had a mouth tape she could trust.
The Benefits That Followed
The results of consistent nasal breathing at night have compounded meaningfully for Jennifer over time. Sleep quality improved. The jarring nighttime arousals that would suddenly jolt her awake from mouth-breathing stopped. "It helps with sleep," she says, "and I think it helps the body remember that it can breathe without having the mouth open."
Perhaps most remarkably, the asthma that had defined her health for decades has largely faded. "My asthma disappeared - it's rare for me to have it now," she shares. She no longer takes steroid nasal sprays or asthma medications, medications she credits with causing early-onset osteoporosis. "I threw all that stuff out and I don't take it anymore."
Jennifer has also noticed the carry-over benefits during her active daytime life. An avid exerciser for decades, she has become more aware of nasal breathing during workouts and sees the difference it makes in endurance and recovery.
A Story for Anyone Still Searching for the Right Tape
Jennifer's path from lifelong mouth breather, to frustrated tape-trialer, to finally finding a product gentle and reliable enough to stick with is one that resonates for so many. Not every mouth tape is created equal, and for people with sensitive skin, the material and adhesive quality matter enormously.
"I feel very strongly about the mouth tape," she says simply. And after 13-plus years of searching for a solution that truly works, that conviction says everything.
